My traveling tips for your trip to Cancun:
-LOCATION
Though RIU Palace Peninsula was conveniently located right across the Kukulcan street from the Aqua Tours Marina and the ferry that takes you to Isla Mujeres, I would recommend staying in a hotel closer to downtown where are all the shopping is. This area is closer to the airport (maybe 15-20 min closer ) as well as closer to Xcaret Theme Park and Playa del Carmen. But if you take into consideration taking shuttles everywhere imagine having to be one of the last stops of an endless line of hotels. I feel like we could have saved some time being closer to everything and saved on transportation time.
-DURATION
I feel like 5 days atleast would give you enough time to do all the things you want to do. We stayed for 4 nights and it was not enough time to do everything we wanted to do. We ended up only being able to go to Xcaret Theme Park and a Speed boat and snorkel tour of Laguna Nichupte. ( [Top] Things to do in Cancun in my next blog post ) If you figure one day to check in to your hotel (check in time is usually at 3pm ) and one day to check out ( 12pm ) ==> thats 2 days right there.
-CURRENCY
Bring plenty of change I would say $20 and a lot $1's. Current exchange rate is 12 -14 pesos to the dollar. I would convert my money in the US before getting to Mexico, because they try to jack down the rate to the 10 pesos to the dollar.
-TRANSPORTATION
This is one of our most inconveniences. We took a shuttle everywhere, but based on the location of our hotel it was an inconvenience since we were one of last stops of the long line of hotels in Zona Hoteleria. Buses are also available for $1 to get you basically anywhere, but again many stops. One thing I would consider when going again to Cancun is renting our own car. We didn't look into the rates, but I think it would be well worth it and more convenient. I did notice that shuttles, buses, and taxis drive really really crazy.
